Australian private health insurer attitudes towards osteopathy: A qualitative study

Introduction/backgroundAustralian osteopaths predominately work in private practice. The vast majority of patients who present to fund their own care, with many receiving a rebate through health insurance cover. While there is little that describes the relationship between Australian osteopathy profession and insurers, such information could provide an opportunity for insurers improve coverage enhanced benefits.Aim/objectivesTo identify extent cover available explore attitudes towards profession.MethodsThis qualitative study used: 1) content analysis offerings osteopathy, 2) Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) inform interviews representatives from insurers. were transcribed coded respect TDF.ResultsOf 35 Australia, 33 offered benefits osteopathy. Four conducted 10 largest benefits. Osteopathy represents very small proportion services. inclusion osteopathic services market driven. Private had limited knowledge understanding however, they acknowledged value some members saw care. bundled complementary allied by 91.4% insurers.ConclusionOsteopathy included insurers’ because service value-adds products. Further research into efficacy cost-effectiveness as well educational campaign provides about scope are needed secure its ongoing Australia.
